Salsa Night: Chico Alvarez and Mafimba

ERNEST “CHICO” ALVAREZ PERAZA is a Cuban-American author, songwriter, vocalist and bandleader. He was also the host of a long running radio show, “New World Gallery”, which aired from 1986 until 2017 on Saturday and Sunday afternoons over commercial-free WBAI radio (99.5 FM).

As a performer, Chico has appeared on stage at music festivals, such as Summer Stage, Celebrate Brooklyn, Lincoln Center Out Of Doors, Avery Fisher Hall, Damrosh Park, NJPAC, Queens Theatre In The Park and Flushing Town Hall, Harlem Jazz Festival, Battery Park Music Festival, African Street Festival and at The Skirball Center.

CHICO ALVAREZ and MAFÍMBA’s sound is unique and the core group is very versatile, with each musician able to interpret a broad range of genres, such as jazz, Latin jazz, salsa, charanga, & mambo.

The band’s repertoire covers a wide range of great Cuban and New York classics from the golden era of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
