Grand Army of the Republic
The Grand Army of the Republic was the largest and most successful organization of Civil War veterans. Formed in 1866, less than a year after the war ended, the G.A.R. boasted more than 410,000 members at its peak, and served as fraternal order, political advocate, local charity, and a source or patriotic service by and for United States military veterans of the late war.
Visit the Lincoln Depot Museum Sept. 17, 23, or 24, 1:00 – 4:00 pm, to see a Grand Army of the Republic memorabilia collection that includes original G.A.R. post charters, flags and banners, bibles and ritual books, photographs, meeting proceedings, medals, ribbons, and much more!
